National Sticky Bun Day

Happy National Sticky Bun Day

Brought to you by El Bolillo Bakery; Houston, TX

I’ve recently started following Punchbowl on twitter (my handle is activelifecook fwiw) which tells me all of the odd days that are out there. Well, today was a reason to celebrate…it’s National Sticky Bun Day (2/20/10)! I woke up early this morning, 6:30am to be exact, to surprise my husband with breakfast before he had to go into work. El Bolillo fit the bill… [Read More]

Chinese New Year

Happy Lots of Things!

Including, but not limited to…Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day, and Blog Anniversary…

Well, seems like we were just celebrating the Western New Year, and here we are, Chinese New Year! I never celebrated Chinese New Year. Perhaps it’s because I’m a Caucasian female “true blue” American (we can trace both sides of my family in the US before the Revolution)? Perhaps it’s because I never really liked Chinese food? Regardless, I never had reason to celebrate the Chinese holiday. That is until now… [Read More]

Week 18: Working Through the Pains…

and the Leftovers…

plate_1

This week was a recovery week for us…recovery in a couple of ways. Recovering from the Thanksgiving Holiday (plus all of those leftovers, my vegan platter shown above) and allowing our bodies recover from 16+ miles of running over the course of 3 days! Luckily as the week has progressed, we’ve been able to ease back into our normal routine and divorce ourselves from night after night of leftovers! [Read More]

Plus a Great Gnocchi Recipe for Leftover Butternut Squash!

Once again, hope everyone is enjoying their holiday weekend. Mark is back off to work today, and I’ll be back to work tomorrow, so…back to the grind…until Christmas! This past week actually proved to be easier to keep up our routine than we would have thought. With the multitude of “Turkey Trots” across the country, it’s hard not to find a race to keep up your fitness level over the holiday (not to mention allow you more special treats). I digress…let’s dive into our week in review! [Read More]

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween From ALC!

stef_2

Just wanted to stop by for a minute to wish my followers a Happy Halloween! It’s my first time in over 10 years to dress up and play along with Halloween and me and my partner in crime are off to a “Triple Threat” party (Halloween, Housewarming, Birthday). I made my famous guacamole and pumpkin pie bars (recipe may come soon) to share.  This year, I’m playing the part of “stupid and injured marathon runner” while Mark is playing the role of my coach. Our costumes are fantastically ghetto and only cost $15 between the two of us! :-) [Read More]

Training Update – Week 6

Getting Back to Basics Bake Sale and Another Milestone Accomplished!

cookie_porch1

This week was broken up a bit by a four-day weekend for me for Labor Day (which Mark unfortunately had to work), but with Mark away, it gave me an excellent opportunity to “Labor over Labor Day” to bake for my “Monday Bake Sale” (Tuesday this week for obvious reasons…). Inspired to keep a theme going, I decided to do cookies this week, but instead of experimenting as I normally do, I decided to get “Back to Basics” with Basic Chocolate Chip Cookies and Oatmeal Raisin Cookies. We are keeping on track with our training as well, I’ve introduced Mark to yoga, which we plan on doing together at least once a week. We also participated in the Brian O’Neill’s Pub Run, which is a weekly 5k held on Tuesday evenings at Rice University. [Read More]

Labor Day Dinner

The “B4 Burger”: You Won’t Believe it’s Nearly Meatless!

4Beat

Labor Day…the day that (most) Americans celebrate the Labor Party. Well, actually it is now more of a celebration of the end of summer…but not here in Houston, where temperatures are still commonly getting up into the mid-90′s (today included)! Mark had to work today, so that left me to my own devices, yielding a lot of baking and preparing for dinner. Tonight’s dinner was the B4 Burger, recipe courtesy of the Austin American Statesman, served alongside sweet potato fries and grilled corn on the cob. Topped off with a nice cold beer, and you’ve got one awesome meal to celebrate! [Read More]
