Getting Back to Basics Bake Sale and Another Milestone Accomplished!

This week was broken up a bit by a four-day weekend for me for Labor Day (which Mark unfortunately had to work), but with Mark away, it gave me an excellent opportunity to “Labor over Labor Day” to bake for my “Monday Bake Sale” (Tuesday this week for obvious reasons…). Inspired to keep a theme going, I decided to do cookies this week, but instead of experimenting as I normally do, I decided to get “Back to Basics” with Basic Chocolate Chip Cookies and Oatmeal Raisin Cookies. We are keeping on track with our training as well, I’ve introduced Mark to yoga, which we plan on doing together at least once a week. We also participated in the Brian O’Neill’s Pub Run, which is a weekly 5k held on Tuesday evenings at Rice University. [Read More]
One Week Down…Many More to Come!
Okay…going to multi-task with this post. Planning to give everyone a quick update on my training and give out my “famous” whole wheat brownie recipe!

The Journey of 26.2 miles Begins…to Support a Great Cause!

I mentioned in passing in a previous post that my hubby and I joined Team in Training for our first Marathon, the 2010 Chevron Houston Marathon. Well, the insanity of training has begun, as has fundraising…I’m not so worried about the insanity of training. I’m a glutton for punishment (see Mudd Maxx 5k, and other race posts), and enjoy promoting a healthy lifestyle. However, fundraising and cheerleading has never been one of my stronger suits. Asking for money, nah…I’d rather earn it! So, what are my reasons for reaching out of my comfort zone to fundraise for my first marathon? The man pictured above, the first man of my life….my father! Breaking in our New House with a Good Old Fashioned Party…

So, we are well on our way to putting together our new house. We now have phone (like it matters in this day and age), DSL (matters), and cable (but not yet strong enough for digital…), and even a few curtains up (custom curtains = serious $$$)! Part of the reason we are getting settled in so fast is because I scheduled a housewarming party. Not as much to get gifts or anything (anyone who knows me, knows that I’m not a big gift person…), but more so we could keep ourselves on track and get the house put together with a deadline in sight. Getting Back into the Groove after our BIG move!

Sorry for such a long hiatus, but exciting things are happening in our life right now. The biggest one was closing on our first house on June 30th! It was an arduous (not particularly long, but definitely arduous) process and the transition from our old to new house has been slower than we had anticipated… [Read More]
Homemade Applesauce, Another Race, and Another Mentor Lost…

It’s been a busy week and starting off a busy weekend! I love to be busy…so there is much to say and not so much time to say it…
First, I wanted to post my first experience in making homemade applesauce. It’s quick, very easy, and much healthier for you than the sugar-laden counterparts you buy at the grocery…Second, a quick recap of my latest 5k I ran this morning…and finally, remembering another mentor in my life who just passed from pancreatic cancer (the second this year from the disease)… [Read More]
Welcome to Our Nightmare!

So, you may have noticed I went on a bit of a hiatus there this past week or so…well…it’s for good reason, we got flooded out last Monday night (April 27) and have been running around trying to get our lives back to normal ever since. I’ll get back to food blogging soon, but first let me tell you our story. Hopefully you won’t have to live this nightmare… [Read More]
A “Good Kind of Different” for your next Oatmeal Cookie!

I love oatmeal raisin cookies…
When I was a kid, my grandmother always had oatmeal raisin cookies waiting for us! She was diabetic, so it was what she felt comfortable making with her dietary needs. I miss those days, she passed over 10 years ago, but I still remember those cookies. Well, since for my grandmother-in-law’s passing, I decided to create my own oatmeal cookies for my in-laws to enjoy (along with my double chocolate tofu cookies with cranberries and my honey wheat chocolate chip cookies). Mine are a bit unorthodox, but I’m an unorthodox person…blueberry oatmeal cookies! They cost a bit more, as dried blueberries can get pricey, but they definitely are worth it for a special occassion or to really cheer someone up. [Read More]
It’s Official…Summer has Returned to Houston…
The Face of Sadness...Return of Heat and Humidity...
This week I had plans to help host a Mexican Fiesta…well those plans fell through, so earlier this week I decided on a whim to sign up for yet another 5k. This time, it was supporting a local school that teaches children with Downs and other disabilities. The hardest part of the race were the conditions, this morning at race time, temperatures were ~72F which alone isn’t bad, but when you couple it with 80% humidity, it sucks! Plain and simple, sucks! The main drive for the drastic humidity increase today were a line of strong to severe thunderstorms that whipped through last night. Lots of rain fell…which means lots of moisture in the air this morning. Oh, how I long to be back in the North East where storms meant a cold front and not an influx of yucky Gulf air… [Read More]
Running for a Cause and Learning More about Sustainable Living!

Today I ran the Mother’s for Clean Air 5k in Houston, TX…I dedicated this race to my late grandmother-in-law, who passed on Thursday morning. My goal was to set a PR, and I did it! Here’s to you Grandma S! [Read More]
