And Now for Something (not so) Completely
Different…

Preparing for a (half) marathon (happy beforehand above), injuries, fundraising, holidays, work, and vacation takes a lot out of a girl. So it shouldn’t come as a big surprise that I needed a bit of a break from blogging… [Read More]
“And Now a Word From Our Sponsor…”

Well, not really, just a hearty thanks from me (maybe Bill can chime in?) but yep, you heard it here first (if you aren’t friends with me on Facebook)…I have officially secured my first sponsor for my Team in Training event. Berger Geosciences, LLC has been kind enough to sponsor me for the Chevron Houston (Half) Marathon! [Read More]
Breaking Records and Feeling Sore!

It’s been an interesting and tiring week in our household…our schedule pretty much has been: work, run, eat, sleep, repeat! The run part has finally started taking a bit more of a toll on my body, as has allergy season, which has hit me with full impact. We also were breaking records, both Mark and I ran the Susan Komen Race for the Cure on Saturday and broke our 5k race records (Mark by over 3 minutes)! All of these factors put together has yielded a very run down Stef…but not run down enough to keep me from baking for my Monday Bake Sale! This week I was feeling like I was missing home and all that is fall…so…I decided to use apples as the central theme for this week’s bake sale (apple cinnamon cookies shown above)! [Read More]
Challenges Begin and a New Tasty Quick Bread Recipe

Week three has come and gone with some success, and some new challenges posed to us. Fundraising has gone well and we are settling well into our schedule (as has our new pup, Sasha). However, I’ve had a reoccurring overuse injury that I hope won’t slow me down in the weeks to come… [Read More]
The Journey of 26.2 miles Begins…to Support a Great Cause!

I mentioned in passing in a previous post that my hubby and I joined Team in Training for our first Marathon, the 2010 Chevron Houston Marathon. Well, the insanity of training has begun, as has fundraising…I’m not so worried about the insanity of training. I’m a glutton for punishment (see Mudd Maxx 5k, and other race posts), and enjoy promoting a healthy lifestyle. However, fundraising and cheerleading has never been one of my stronger suits. Asking for money, nah…I’d rather earn it! So, what are my reasons for reaching out of my comfort zone to fundraise for my first marathon? The man pictured above, the first man of my life….my father! Fun in the Mud and an Awesome Summer Salad!

Today was the most satisfying run I’ve completed to date…the Mud Maxx 5k! This was the first year of the race, benefiting the Shriners Hospital, but the organizers did a good job getting most everything straightened out and the run went rather smoothly. The object of the race was not time (it was untimed), but to have fun and get as muddy as you could (given that we haven’t had rain in weeks, it wasn’t too muddy though). I’m also going to share with you my after-race lunch. A leftover mediterranean-style bulgar wheat salad we made last night that was just so delish I have to share it’s goodness with the world! Homemade Applesauce, Another Race, and Another Mentor Lost…

It’s been a busy week and starting off a busy weekend! I love to be busy…so there is much to say and not so much time to say it…
First, I wanted to post my first experience in making homemade applesauce. It’s quick, very easy, and much healthier for you than the sugar-laden counterparts you buy at the grocery…Second, a quick recap of my latest 5k I ran this morning…and finally, remembering another mentor in my life who just passed from pancreatic cancer (the second this year from the disease)… [Read More]
It’s Official…Summer has Returned to Houston…
The Face of Sadness...Return of Heat and Humidity...
This week I had plans to help host a Mexican Fiesta…well those plans fell through, so earlier this week I decided on a whim to sign up for yet another 5k. This time, it was supporting a local school that teaches children with Downs and other disabilities. The hardest part of the race were the conditions, this morning at race time, temperatures were ~72F which alone isn’t bad, but when you couple it with 80% humidity, it sucks! Plain and simple, sucks! The main drive for the drastic humidity increase today were a line of strong to severe thunderstorms that whipped through last night. Lots of rain fell…which means lots of moisture in the air this morning. Oh, how I long to be back in the North East where storms meant a cold front and not an influx of yucky Gulf air… [Read More]
Running for a Cause and Learning More about Sustainable Living!

Today I ran the Mother’s for Clean Air 5k in Houston, TX…I dedicated this race to my late grandmother-in-law, who passed on Thursday morning. My goal was to set a PR, and I did it! Here’s to you Grandma S! [Read More]
