Happy National Sticky Bun Day

I’ve recently started following Punchbowl on twitter (my handle is activelifecook fwiw) which tells me all of the odd days that are out there. Well, today was a reason to celebrate…it’s National Sticky Bun Day (2/20/10)! I woke up early this morning, 6:30am to be exact, to surprise my husband with breakfast before he had to go into work. El Bolillo fit the bill… [Read More]
Keeping Up Motivation Over the Holiday Season…
Plus a Great Gnocchi Recipe for Leftover Butternut Squash!

Once again, hope everyone is enjoying their holiday weekend. Mark is back off to work today, and I’ll be back to work tomorrow, so…back to the grind…until Christmas! This past week actually proved to be easier to keep up our routine than we would have thought. With the multitude of “Turkey Trots” across the country, it’s hard not to find a race to keep up your fitness level over the holiday (not to mention allow you more special treats). I digress…let’s dive into our week in review! [Read More]
It’s Official…Summer has Returned to Houston…
The Face of Sadness...Return of Heat and Humidity...
This week I had plans to help host a Mexican Fiesta…well those plans fell through, so earlier this week I decided on a whim to sign up for yet another 5k. This time, it was supporting a local school that teaches children with Downs and other disabilities. The hardest part of the race were the conditions, this morning at race time, temperatures were ~72F which alone isn’t bad, but when you couple it with 80% humidity, it sucks! Plain and simple, sucks! The main drive for the drastic humidity increase today were a line of strong to severe thunderstorms that whipped through last night. Lots of rain fell…which means lots of moisture in the air this morning. Oh, how I long to be back in the North East where storms meant a cold front and not an influx of yucky Gulf air… [Read More]
You won’t find Tex-Mex here…You go for Mexican…Pure Mexican!

Ever since living in North Carolina for two years (go Heels!), I’ve been way into Mexican food. I always liked Tex-Mex when I was a kid, but I had never been exposed to real, good, Mexican food until my pass through North Carolina. When I moved to Wisconsin, I craved true Mexican food, only to be disappointed with nearly every restaurant. Then we moved down to Texas…surely there must be good Mexican food in Texas! However, we got lost in a swirl of Tex-Mex (which we do enjoy, especially Sylvia’s) with very few “true” Mexican stand-bys…Then we go to San Antonio…La Fogota is just about as pure Mexican as we’ve found down here…and it felt great! Where 3-Course Breakfasts Come Standard…as does Relaxation!

For my birthday weekend (and in part to celebrate our upcoming 2nd anniversary), we went to San Antonio for a few days of R&R at a B&B, Inn at Craig Place. What drew us to this inn was it’s location (near downtown, but not on Riverwalk) and it’s advertisement of a 3-course breakfast every morning. We had to check it out! [Read More]
Greek Food, Fast in San Antonio

On Thursday, we arrived in San Antonio just in time for a late(ish) lunch. Without an idea of where to go first, we stopped by the B&B (to see the area) and checked UrbanSpoon on my iPhone to see what was quick, easy, and good in the area. Demos Greek Food was only 0.2 miles away and got great reviews for lunch. We both love good Greek food and sounded like a winner…we were right! [Read More]
My Birthday in Review

Wednesday was my 27th birthday, no foolin’! So, I’ve been MIA for a few days here relaxing and taking a few days off to go to San Antonio for the first time (reviews coming soon).
I woke up to my husband finishing up my delicious cinnamon-vanilla-strawberry French Toast! What really made it (and my day) was the use of a seed bread from HEB Bakery. The sunflower seeds really complimented the taste of the cinnamon and vanilla in the toast soak. I have a great husband! [Read More]
Cold(ish) and Sunny Conditions Result in a Personal Best and a Great Breakfast!

Today I raced my first 5k since I was in Austin a few weeks back. It felt good, really good! [Read More]
Summer is coming…are you ready to grill? (Cooking School pt. 2)

Welcome to part 2 chronicling our trip to Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen Beef Fajita Cooking School!
The main event of last weekend’s cooking school was grilling beef fajitas. Not too many secrets were given, Sylvia does in fact specialize in enchiladas, but her beef fajitas are still excellent! Sylvia herself said that her beef fajitas have taken years to develop and process and simplicity in the marinade is what makes her fajitas great. [Read More]
What is Capirotada? Sylvia will teach you! (Cooking School pt 1)
Capirotada, ready to eat! Photo taken with permission of Sylvia Casares
Last Saturday, my husband and I went to Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen for a cooking school on how to grill beef fajitas. It was an excellent class, taught by ex-home economics teacher and food scientist, now restaurateur Sylvia Casares. Sylvia’s knack for teaching shone as she weaved stories of her early life in South Texas to explain her cooking styles. I’m going to go over cooking school in a few posts…but have to do the dessert first…capirotada! [Read More]
